Absolute Black Granite is quarried from formations in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, South India — regions that have supplied the international stone trade with black granite for several decades. The quarries producing commercial-grade Absolute Black are concentrated around Ongole in Andhra Pradesh and Hassan in Karnataka, where geological conditions created unusually dense, pure black igneous rock with very low porosity.
Gemarix sources Absolute Black through established South Indian processing partners, with every consignment quality-checked for colour consistency, surface quality, and dimensional accuracy. The key quality indicator for this stone is colour uniformity — poorly graded Absolute Black will show grey tones or mineral variation that breaks the all-black appearance. Our standard specification requires consistent jet black across the full slab face.
Commercially marketed as granite, Absolute Black is geologically closer to gabbro — an igneous intrusive rock with a fine-to-medium grain structure composed almost entirely of pyroxene and amphibole minerals, with little to no light-coloured feldspar or quartz visible at the surface. This mineral composition is precisely why the colour is so uniform and so dark: there are very few light-toned minerals present.
The stone's density is exceptionally high, its water absorption rate negligible, and its compressive strength among the highest of any commercially exported Indian stone. Its interlocked crystalline structure contributes to exceptional chip-resistance and long-term dimensional stability under loading and thermal cycling — critical properties for both countertop and exterior facade applications.
Polished finish on Absolute Black achieves a mirror quality rare in natural stone — the surface reflectivity rivals that of glass, making it visually distinctive from the moment it is installed. No two black granites look like Absolute Black under a polished finish. The colour is not a surface treatment or applied coating; it is a geological characteristic. There is no veining, no speckle, no mineral variation — just an absolute, uniform blackness that makes other stones look visually complicated by comparison.
The uniformity that makes this stone commercially unique also makes quality control critical. Sub-standard grades of Absolute Black show grey patches, visible grain variation, or surface pitting that dilutes the monolithic quality buyers specify this stone for. Our grading process rejects any slab that does not meet our jet-black standard before it leaves the processing facility.
No stone in our catalog is specified more consistently for contemporary and minimalist architecture than Absolute Black. Kitchen countertops in residential and commercial settings represent its highest-volume application — the near-zero porosity makes it genuinely resistant to oils, acids, and heat marks in a working kitchen. Bathroom floors and vanity tops are a close second, particularly in monochrome design schemes.
For commercial projects, it is specified regularly for stair nosings, elevator lobby flooring, reception desk tops, bar surfaces, and exterior facade panels. Memorial and monument applications internationally draw on its density and colour uniformity. Our gangsaw slabs provide the large-format dimensions required for commercial lobby floors and hotel reception walls without visible joints.
Absolute Black's finish choice dramatically changes how the stone reads — from mirror-reflective to flat matte to rough industrial.
Maintenance is the simplest of any stone in our range: the density of this material means almost nothing penetrates the surface under normal conditions. A damp cloth with a neutral cleaner is sufficient for daily care. No sealing is required for most applications — though we recommend a light impregnating sealer for kitchen countertop installations to simplify long-term maintenance and protect against cooking oil penetration over time.
Polished surfaces should be cleaned with a pH-neutral stone cleaner to preserve the mirror polish. Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, citrus-based products) on polished interiors. For exterior flamed installations, periodic pressure washing is sufficient — the rough texture does not trap contamination in the way a polished surface might. Re-polishing interior floors after several years of high-traffic use is straightforward and restores the mirror quality fully.
