South Indian Granite

Baltic Brown Granite.

Baltic Brown is one of the most distinctive granites in the natural stone market — a richly coloured reddish-brown and chocolate stone defined by its characteristic large oval mineral clusters (orbicules) set against a fine-grained dark matrix.

About Brown

Baltic Brown Granite is quarried from established deposits in South India, where the combination of reddish-brown feldspar, dark hornblende, and biotite-rich orbicular texture produces one of the most recognisable stone patterns in global export. The stone has been in continuous supply for several decades and is specified extensively in kitchen countertop and commercial interior projects across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. FOB Mundra / Nhava Sheva. Origin and specifications verified by Gemarix.

Geological Profile

Density ~2.75 g/cm³
Water Absorption <0.20%
Compressive Strength ~198 MPa
Mohs Hardness 6 – 7

Baltic Brown is a rapakivi-textured granite characterised by large ovoid orthoclase feldspar megacrysts mantled by albite rims — the classic orbicular or rapakivi texture — set within a fine-grained matrix of quartz, hornblende, biotite, and iron-rich feldspar. The reddish-brown colour of the matrix results from elevated iron content in the potassium feldspar and the presence of iron-oxide alteration minerals. Hornblende clusters appear as dark circular to oval bodies that provide the stone's characteristic three-tone patterning. The stone has low porosity and good overall mechanical strength.

Color & Character

Baltic Brown Granite is immediately recognisable by its layered three-tone composition: a reddish-brown to chocolate-brown matrix, overlaid with lighter oval feldspar megacrysts, and punctuated by near-circular clusters of dark hornblende and biotite. The orbicular pattern is distributed across the slab face without directionality, creating a busy, organic composition unlike any flat-textured granite. The contrast between the warm brown ground, the lighter feldspar bodies, and the dark mineral clusters intensifies on polished surfaces, making this one of the most visually active granites available.

Best Applications

Kitchen Countertops

Baltic Brown's rich colour and high surface durability make it a perennial choice for kitchen worktops — its busy pattern concealing minor marks and providing a warm, characterful alternative to plainer stones.

Bar & Reception Counters

The stone's bold visual character makes it well suited to bar tops, reception desks, and hospitality counters where material richness is part of the interior brief.

Wall Cladding

Feature wall panels in dining rooms, hotel lobbies, and retail spaces benefit from the stone's distinctive pattern and warm colour range.

Flooring

Large-format honed or polished Baltic Brown tiles create statement floors in entrance halls and commercial spaces, the orbicular texture adding natural visual interest.

Exterior Facades

The stone's frost resistance and durability make it suitable for sheltered exterior cladding applications, entrance surrounds, and plinth facings.

Bathroom Vanities

Polished Baltic Brown vanity tops and wall cladding create warm, richly textured bathroom environments with a strong natural stone character.

Care & Maintenance

Baltic Brown Granite has low natural porosity and is relatively stain resistant. Apply an impregnating sealer at installation for kitchen and bathroom applications and re-seal every 18 to 24 months. The dark matrix conceals minor staining better than pale stones. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid acidic or abrasive products. The polished finish is robust and retains its depth of colour under normal conditions.
