South Indian Granite

Black Forest Granite.

Black Forest Granite is a deep charcoal-grey stone from Karnataka with a fine, even speckle of lighter grey and silver minerals — a sophisticated, less stark alternative to pure black granites that works well across interior and exterior applications.

About Forest

Black Forest Granite is quarried in Karnataka, within the Dharwar Craton, where the specific combination of dark hornblende-rich mineralogy with lighter feldspar produces a consistently dark grey stone with subtle tonal variation. The quarry is a well-established production source supplying both domestic and export markets. Blocks are processed to gangsaw slabs and tiles at Karnataka processing units before FOB loading at Mundra / Nhava Sheva. Origin and specifications verified by Gemarix.

Geological Profile

Density ~2.94 g/cm³
Water Absorption <0.10%
Compressive Strength ~205 MPa
Mohs Hardness 6 – 7

Black Forest is a fine-to-medium grained mafic granite to gabbro dominated by hornblende, plagioclase feldspar, and subordinate quartz. The dark matrix results from the high hornblende and biotite content, while lighter plagioclase grains introduce a fine silver-grey speckle across the black field. Accessory magnetite and ilmenite contribute additional opacity to the matrix. The low porosity — well below 0.1% water absorption — makes the stone highly resistant to staining and frost damage.

Color & Character

Black Forest Granite presents a deep charcoal-grey to near-black background scattered with small to medium grains of lighter grey plagioclase that introduce a subtle, even speckle across the surface. Unlike pure black granites, the lighter mineral component gives the stone a softer, less absolute quality — visually darker than grey granites but with more inherent movement than absolute blacks. On polished surfaces, the lighter feldspar grains develop a sheen that contrasts with the dark hornblende matrix, creating a nuanced, layered appearance.

Best Applications

Kitchen Countertops

Black Forest's near-zero porosity and high hardness make it an excellent kitchen worktop material, combining the practical benefits of an absolute black with a slightly softer visual character.

Wall Cladding

Dark feature walls in hospitality lobbies, residential interiors, and commercial spaces benefit from the stone's depth and the subtle texture its mineral speckle introduces.

Flooring

Honed Black Forest provides excellent slip resistance for high-traffic commercial floors, corridors, and entrance areas while maintaining a dark, contemporary aesthetic.

Exterior Facades

The stone's high density and near-zero porosity make it suitable for exterior cladding, plinth facings, and paving in all climatic conditions.

Bathroom Surfaces

Polished Black Forest vanity tops and shower walls create dark, dramatic bathroom environments with the practical advantage of very low staining risk.

Staircase Treads

The stone's hardness and natural dark colour make it a practical and visually refined choice for staircase treads, risers, and landing surfaces.

Care & Maintenance

Black Forest Granite requires minimal maintenance due to its near-zero porosity. An impregnating sealer at installation provides added protection for kitchen and bathroom use but is not strictly required for most applications. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner; the dark surface will show water marks on polished finishes if not dried promptly. Polished Black Forest retains its finish under normal conditions without periodic re-polishing.
