South Indian Granite

Coin Black Granite.

Coin Black Granite is a dense, near-black stone from Karnataka with a very fine matrix and occasional disc-like mineral features that give the stone a subtle patterning distinct from uniform absolute blacks.

About Black

Coin Black Granite is quarried in Karnataka's granite belt, where mafic Precambrian intrusives produce the dense black matrix characteristic of the stone. Processing at established Karnataka units produces gangsaw slabs and calibrated tiles for export. The stone has a consistent market in memorial, countertop, and architectural facade applications. FOB Mundra / Nhava Sheva. Origin and specifications verified by Gemarix.

Geological Profile

Density ~2.98 g/cm³
Water Absorption <0.08%
Compressive Strength ~210 MPa
Mohs Hardness 6 – 7

Coin Black is a fine-grained dolerite to gabbro dominated by plagioclase feldspar, augite, and hornblende, with accessory magnetite and ilmenite. The very fine grain size and high mafic mineral content produce the dense, near-opaque black matrix. The occasional disc-like to circular features visible at the surface are small-scale orbicular segregations of pyroxene and plagioclase within the otherwise uniform dark matrix. Near-zero porosity makes the stone exceptionally resistant to staining and moisture ingress.

Color & Character

Coin Black Granite presents a dense, uniform jet-black matrix broken at intervals by subtle disc-shaped to circular mineral segregations — small, rounded features slightly lighter or darker than the surrounding ground that give the stone a quiet patterning compared to a true absolute black. On polished surfaces, the black matrix achieves very high reflectivity and the faint circular features become more visible, adding a geometric natural texture. The stone's darkness and density give it a serious, architectural quality well suited to formal interior and exterior applications.

Best Applications

Memorials & Monuments

The dense black matrix, consistent grain, and durable polish of Coin Black make it a reliable specification for memorial stones, headstones, and monument elements worldwide.

Kitchen Countertops

Near-zero porosity and extreme hardness make Coin Black a practical and visually striking kitchen worktop material that requires minimal maintenance.

Wall Cladding

Polished or honed Coin Black panels create high-impact dark feature walls in hotel lobbies, residential interiors, and commercial reception areas.

Flooring

Honed Coin Black provides excellent slip resistance for high-traffic commercial floors while maintaining a deep, uniform dark aesthetic.

Exterior Facades

High compressive strength and frost resistance make the stone suitable for building cladding, column wraps, and entrance step applications in all climates.

Bathroom Surfaces

Polished vanity tops and shower wall cladding in Coin Black create dramatic, low-maintenance dark bathroom environments.

Care & Maintenance

Coin Black Granite requires minimal maintenance. Its near-zero porosity provides inherent stain resistance without sealing in most applications. For kitchen countertop use, an impregnating sealer applied at installation and refreshed annually provides additional assurance. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner; the polished surface shows water marks easily — dry promptly after cleaning. Avoid abrasive products that could micro-scratch the polished finish.
