North vs South Indian Granite: What the Difference Means for Buyers

Journal  /  Stone Guide  ·  22 August 2026  ·  5 min read

"Indian granite" is two industries wearing one label. They sit two thousand kilometres apart, produce different stones, ship from different coasts, and price differently.

An importer who does not know which belt their stone comes from will eventually book the wrong port, quote the wrong lead time, or accept a Rajasthani stone described as Brazilian.

Why the port matters more than you think

Quoting FOB Mundra for a Chimakurthy granite is a quote that has not been thought about, and any experienced buyer will read it that way immediately.

Practical consequences of getting the belt wrong:

If you are buying both belts, plan two containers, not one.

The North Indian granites

Rajasthan's granite belt is less famous than the South's and produces a genuinely distinct palette.

The Deogarh (Devgarh) belt — the most commercially important North granite area, and the one most misrepresented in the trade:

The Jalore–Sirohi belt — premium dark and desert-toned granites: Titanium Black, Fish Black, Desert Brown (Devra), Desert Gold, Desert Green, Malwada Gold (Malwada Yellow), Apple Green (Verde Mela), Bala Flower (Bala village), Nosra Green (Nosra village), French Green — which is not French and must be described as Indian.

JaisalmerLakha Red, from Lakha village near Fatehgarh. Also traded as Jaisalmer Red and Imperial Red, which collides with Ilkal red. Name it precisely.

Other North sources — Jhansi Red (Rosso Jhansi) from Jhansi in UP; New Imperial Red from the Chhatarpur belt in MP; Crystal Blue from Idar in Gujarat; Marine Black Granite from Asind in Bhilwara; Azul White from Jahajpur in Bhilwara; Blue Dunes from Beawar in the Ajmer belt; Tiger Skin from the Ajmer–Bhilwara belt; S White and Koliwada White from the Koliwara belt at Sumerpur, Pali.

The South Indian granites

The South is where India's global export heroes come from.

Premium tier:

Standard tier — a long list including Kashmir White and Kashmir Gold (Madurai/Melur, TN — not Kashmir), Colonial White (Madurai, Bianco Romano), Viscount White (Madanapalle, Chittoor), Vizag Blue (Visakhapatnam), Kuppam Green (Kuppam, Chittoor), Colombo Juparana (Karur/Manapparai), Himalayan Blue (Kanakapura, Karnataka — not the Himalaya), Sadarahalli Grey (Bangalore Rural), Lavender Blue (Ganjam, Odisha).

The reclassifications we made to our own records

Field verification moved several stones between our categories, and we publish the changes rather than quietly updating a spreadsheet:

Moved to South Indian: Green Pearl (Guntur, AP), Sierra Grey (Tumkur, Karnataka), Shiva Gold (Dharmapuri, TN). All three were previously categorised as North Indian and route through Chennai, not Mundra.

Moved to North Indian: Coin Black (Chittorgarh / Rajsamand, Rajasthan).

Origin corrections: Tan Brown to Karimnagar (the Salem claim dropped). Black Forest to Warangal/Khammam (previously Kolar). Lakha Red to Lakha village, Jaisalmer (previously Sikar). New Imperial Red to Chhatarpur MP and Ilkal Karnataka (previously Sikar). Viscount White to Madanapalle, Himalayan Blue to Kanakapura, Imperial Gold to Madakasira, Colombo Juparana to Karur.

Still unresolved, and not claimed as Indian: Alpinus White, Fusion Black, Andromeda White, Labrador Blue. Our field records flag Brazilian, Sri Lankan or Norwegian possibilities for these and we will not make an Indian origin claim until the actual supply is confirmed.

What this means for your buying

Ask which belt. Then ask which district. Then ask which quarry.

Match the port to the belt. Rajasthan and Gujarat ship ex-Mundra or Kandla. Andhra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka ship ex-Chennai or Krishnapatnam. The Vizag belt ships ex-Visakhapatnam.

Do not accept "Brazilian" on a Deogarh stone. The Alaska series and Patagonia Gold are Rajasthani. If you are paying a South American premium, you are paying twice.

Do not accept "Kashmir" on a Madurai stone, or "Himalayan" on a Kanakapura stone — not because the names are forbidden, but because you should know what you are buying.

What Gemarix does differently

We are a Rajasthan exporter with verified origin records across both belts, and we publish the corrections we made to our own documentation. We quote from the port the stone actually ships from, and we keep foreign stone off the Indian list entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between North and South Indian granite?

They are effectively two industries. North Indian granite comes from Rajasthan and neighbouring belts and ships from Mundra or Kandla on the west coast. South Indian granite comes from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and ships from Chennai, Krishnapatnam or Visakhapatnam on the east coast.

Can I combine North and South Indian granite in one container?

Not without moving one of them across India by road, which is expensive, slow and adds handling damage risk. If you are buying across both belts, plan two containers from two coasts rather than one.

Which belt does Absolute Black come from?

South India. Absolute Black is quarried at Chamarajanagar in Karnataka and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu, with a value tier out of Warangal and Khammam in Telangana. It ships from Chennai or Krishnapatnam, not Mundra, and the belt determines both grade and price.

Are the Alaska granites Brazilian?

No. Alaska White, Alaska Gold, Alaska Red, Alaska Pink and Patagonia Gold are all quarried in the Deogarh belt of Rajasthan. They are widely sold internationally as Brazilian, so a buyer paying a South American premium for them is paying twice for the same rock.

Is Kashmir White from Kashmir?

No. Kashmir White and Kashmir Gold come from Madurai and Melur in Tamil Nadu. Himalayan Blue comes from Kanakapura in Karnataka, not the Himalaya. These are trade conventions rather than geography, and a good supplier states the real district on the quotation.

Two belts, two ports, one quote.

Tell us the stones and the destination. We will tell you which belt each comes from, which port it ships from, and whether your order needs one container or two.
