FCL vs LCL for Stone Shipments: Which to Choose

For most cargo this is a genuine calculation. For natural stone it usually is not, and understanding why saves you both money and broken slabs.

The two options

FCL — Full Container Load. You book a whole container. It is packed at origin, sealed, and not opened until you open it.

LCL — Less than Container Load, also called groupage or consolidation. Your cargo is delivered to a consolidator’s warehouse, loaded into a shared container alongside other shippers’ goods, shipped, then unloaded at a deconsolidation warehouse at destination and released to you.

Why LCL is usually wrong for stone

1. Weight, not volume

Stone is charged by whichever is greater of weight or volume, and stone is dense. Granite runs around 2,700 kg/m³, marble similar, sandstone 2,200–2,500 and limestone 2,400–2,700.

LCL is priced per cubic metre with a weight-to-measure ratio, and stone blows through that ratio immediately. You end up paying for far more than you ship, and the per-unit cost frequently exceeds the FCL rate for a partial container. Run the comparison before assuming LCL is cheaper; for stone the crossover arrives at surprisingly small quantities.

2. Handling — the real reason

An FCL container of stone is handled as a unit: packed once at origin, lifted, trucked, and opened at destination. An LCL consignment is handled at least four extra times — into the consolidator’s warehouse, into the shared container, out at deconsolidation, and out again at release.

Each of those is a forklift near a crate of brittle material handled by people who do not know or care that it is stone. Stone breaks during handling, not at sea. Multiplying the handling multiplies the risk, and it is the strongest argument against LCL for this cargo.

3. Loading discipline

In an FCL you control the packing: A-frames braced to the container, no steel in contact with polished faces, load distributed along the floor. In an LCL your crates are stacked by a consolidator optimising for space. Your stone may end up under someone else’s cargo. A crate of monuments with a pallet of machinery on top is a crate of broken monuments.

4. Claims are harder

With an FCL and a full loading photograph set, a damage claim is straightforward: the container was sealed at origin in this condition and opened at destination in that condition. With an LCL, damage could have occurred at any of five points, in three parties’ custody. Establishing where and whose fault it was is difficult and often not worth the effort.

5. Time and cost at destination

LCL adds deconsolidation time and warehouse handling charges at destination, and it is more exposed to delay because your release depends on the whole container being processed.

When LCL genuinely makes sense

Samples and range panels. Obviously — send them by courier or LCL.

Small quantities of high-value, small-format finished goods. Urn memorials, columbarium plates, small cut-to-size pieces, carved articles. These are individually crated with proper protection, and the value density is high enough to absorb the handling risk.

A genuine one-off where you need a dozen pieces now, and waiting to build a container would cost you a job.

In all three cases, over-pack. LCL packing should be substantially more robust than FCL packing, because the handling environment is worse: individual crates, full-face foam, rigid crate construction, and fragile marking that is actually meaningful.

The FCL practicalities for stone

20ft, not 40ft. Stone reaches the legal weight limit long before it fills the space. A 40ft container of stone would be either dangerously overweight or half empty, which is why stone ships in 20ft containers almost universally. The full arithmetic is in container weight vs volume.

Do the weight arithmetic. Payload limits, road weight limits at destination, and the crane capacity at your yard all matter.

Consolidate your own orders into FCL where you can. If you are buying from more than one supplier in the same Indian belt, ask whether they can consolidate into one container. The constraint is that belt and port must match: Rajasthan and Gujarat material ships ex-Mundra or Kandla; South Indian granite such as Absolute Black from Chamarajanagar and Dharmapuri, Black Galaxy from Chimakurthy and Steel Grey from Prakasam ships ex-Chennai or Krishnapatnam; the Vizag belt ships ex-Visakhapatnam.

You cannot combine a Rajasthan sandstone order and a Chimakurthy granite order into one container without trucking one of them across India, which is expensive, slow and adds handling damage. Plan two containers.

The buyer’s checklist

If you are shipping LCL: over-pack individually, assume worse handling than you would like, photograph everything before it leaves, accept that a claim will be harder, and run the FCL comparison first — it may be cheaper than you assume.

The demurrage warning

Whichever you choose, the number that catches importers is not the freight rate. It is demurrage and detention at destination. Free time is limited, stone is heavy and needs a specific truck, and customs may select it for a slow examination. A week of demurrage on one container can exceed the entire duty saving from a trade agreement.
