Walk through any tower lobby or mall in the Gulf and you are almost certainly walking on Indian granite. As a granite cladding supplier in India, most of what we ship into commercial projects is not countertops — it is floors, lift lobbies, feature walls and external elevations, measured in thousands of square metres rather than kitchens. Why granite still wins on commercial floors and facades
Specifiers keep choosing granite for four reasons, and none of them are about looks.
- It survives traffic. Granite is one of the hardest materials you can put on a floor. A mall concourse or airport corridor sees millions of footfalls, and granite handles that without the surface wearing through.
- It is cheap to keep. Cleaning is water and a neutral cleaner. There is no recoating cycle, no replacement of worn tiles every few years. Over a twenty-year building life, the maintenance line matters more than the supply line.
- It is non-combustible. Natural stone does not burn. On a high-rise elevation that is a serious advantage. Be clear, though, that fire performance belongs to the whole facade build-up — the backing, the insulation, the cavity — not to the stone by itself.
- It handles the climate. Sun, heat and salt air do not fade granite the way they degrade painted and composite panels. In the Gulf that is the whole argument.
Put together, that is a whole-life cost case rather than a first-cost case. Granite rarely wins on the cheapest tender line and usually wins over twenty years.
The UAE construction lane, and why schedule beats everything
The Gulf is where most of our commercial cladding volume goes. Towers, malls, hotels, mixed-use developments — and stone specified in quantities that a small quarry cannot absorb.
Two things make the UAE lane different from a domestic supply. The first is that the sea freight from western India to Jebel Ali is short, which is why Indian stone competes so strongly there. The second is that main contractors work to a programme, and the stone package sits on the critical path. A container that lands two weeks late does not delay the stone — it delays the fit-out behind it.
That is why volume projects should be phased. Agree a delivery schedule tied to the construction programme, not a single bulk drop, and reserve the material at block stage so the colour does not drift between phases.
Colours that hold up in volume
Commercial selection is a different exercise from residential. You are choosing a stone that has to be available in consistent quality for months, not a one-off slab a client fell in love with. These are the granites that reliably deliver at project scale:
- Steel Grey — the default commercial grey. Dark, fine-grained and uniform, which is exactly what you want across a large floor where variation reads as a defect. See our guide to Steel Grey granite flooring and cladding.
- Tan Brown — deep brown with red and black grain. Warm, forgiving of dust and marks, and widely accepted across the Gulf. More detail in our Tan Brown granite guide.
- Absolute Black — uniform, dense, no visible movement. The formal choice for lobbies and entrance floors. Browse it in the black and grey range.
- Black Galaxy — black with fine gold flecking. Use it as a feature rather than a field: a reception desk surround or a lift lobby wall, not an entire concourse. Our Black Galaxy guide covers where it earns its place.
A practical warning about mixing. If a floor runs Steel Grey and the walls run Absolute Black, those are two separate supply chains with two separate consistency risks. Fewer stones across a project means fewer things that can go wrong.

Formats: slabs, tiles and cut-to-size
Commercial granite arrives in three forms, and choosing correctly saves both money and programme time.
- Large-format slabs — cut on site to suit the setting out. Maximum flexibility, but it produces site waste and needs cutting facilities on the project.
- Tiles — standard modular sizes, with 60×60 cm being the common commercial floor module. Fast to lay, easy to order in quantity, easy to replace one damaged unit later.
- Cut-to-size — every piece finished in India to your approved drawings, arriving numbered and ready to fix. Almost no site waste and the fastest installation, but it requires final drawings before production starts. A cut panel cannot be un-cut.
Thickness is set by use, not preference. Interior floors and interior wall cladding are thinner than external facade panels, because an external panel has to carry wind load across its span and is held on mechanical anchors. Heavy-traffic external paving is thicker again. In every case the number should come from the project’s facade engineer against the actual panel size and wind loading, not from a catalogue.
Confirm the current cut-to-size capability and format list before you specify, so your drawings are drawn against what can actually be produced.
Finishes: polished inside, textured outside
This is the single most common specification error we see, and it is an expensive one to correct after installation.
- Polished — reflective and rich in colour. Correct for interior lobbies, feature walls and lift surrounds. Wrong for any external floor: it is slippery when wet and the shine does not last under sun and traffic.
- Flamed — the surface is heated so the crystals burst, leaving a rough texture. The standard external paving finish, and a good slip-resistant choice.
- Bush-hammered — mechanically pitted to an even, coarse texture. Used on external floors and on facades where a matte, tactile surface is wanted.
- Sandblasted — a fine, even matte texture. Lighter in appearance than flamed and often chosen for external walls rather than floors.
- Brushed or honed — smooth matte. Suits interior floors where a softer look is wanted than polish, and interior walls throughout.
The rule is straightforward: if the surface can get wet and people walk on it, it needs texture. Slip resistance should be specified against the test method your market recognises, and confirmed with your consultant rather than assumed from the finish name.
How cladding is actually fixed to the building
Buyers new to stone facades often assume the panels are glued on. On any external elevation of height, they are not — they are held mechanically, and the fixing decides the panel thickness.
- Undercut anchors — a hole is drilled into the back of the panel and widened at the base, so an expanding anchor grips inside the stone without piercing the face. The panel is then carried on a support framework.
- Kerf and dowel systems — a slot or hole is cut into the panel edge and engaged by a bracket. Simpler than undercut anchoring, and common on lower-rise elevations.
- Ventilated rainscreen build-ups — the stone hangs clear of the wall with a drained cavity behind it. This is the standard approach on modern high-rise work.
- Adhesive fixing — appropriate for interior walls and low-level external work only. It is not a substitute for mechanical support at height.
Whatever the system, the anchor holes and kerfs must be machined to the facade engineer’s drawings before the stone ships. That work happens in the factory in India, which is another reason to have approved drawings before production rather than after.
Standards and approvals in the UAE
Two approval routes matter for a UAE project. ESMA conformity requirements apply to a range of building products, and Dubai Municipality alongside Dubai Civil Defence hold approval authority for facade systems and fire and life safety, with equivalent authorities in the other emirates. Facade approval is granted to a system, not to a material, so your consultant and facade contractor lead that submission — our part is supplying stone with the test data and documentation the submission needs.
Ask for test reports on the specific stone you are specifying rather than generic granite data, because properties such as flexural strength vary between granites and the facade engineer will size the panel from them.

Quality control at project volume
On a kitchen, a bad slab is an annoyance. On a facade, a batch that does not match the previous phase is a defect that gets photographed by the client and argued over for months.

What thickness should granite cladding be? It depends on the panel size, the fixing system and the wind load. External facade panels are thicker than interior wall cladding. The number should come from the facade engineer, not a catalogue.
Which finish for external granite flooring? Flamed, bush-hammered or sandblasted — anything textured. Polished granite outdoors is slippery when wet and loses its shine.
