Translucent, deep, luminous — the green onyx of Salumbar.

Origin & Geography

Green Onyx Marble is quarried in the Salumbar area of Udaipur district, southern Rajasthan. While much of the world's onyx comes from Pakistan, Iran, and Mexico, Salumbar's deposits produce a distinctive translucent green onyx that has gained recognition in luxury design markets internationally. The Salumbar onyx forms in cavity-fill deposits where mineral-rich solutions crystallised over geological timescales, producing the characteristic translucent banding that defines onyx as a stone family.

Gemarix sources Green Onyx directly from quarry operators in the Salumbar belt, allowing block-by-block selection for translucency, colour depth, and pattern character. Onyx varies more dramatically than typical marbles — translucency, banding direction, and colour saturation differ significantly between blocks. Our direct relationships make it possible to deliver project-matched material for luxury specifications where the stone's particular character is integral to the design.

Geological Profile

Green Onyx is a cryptocrystalline calcium carbonate stone formed through chemical precipitation in cavity-fill deposits rather than the metamorphic recrystallisation of typical marbles. The green colouration comes from copper, iron, and chromium mineral inclusions trapped in the calcite during crystallisation. The translucent quality that distinguishes onyx from marble comes from the fine cryptocrystalline structure that allows light to pass through the surface — a property that becomes dramatic when the stone is backlit. Origin and specifications verified by Gemarix.

Color & Character

Green Onyx slabs present deep translucent green with flowing banded patterns in lighter green, cream, and occasional gold tones. The translucency is the stone's defining visual character — when backlit, the stone glows with depth that no opaque material can match. Some blocks present richer green concentrations; others carry more visible banding with cream and gold detail; book-matched pairs amplify the dramatic patterning.

The stone pairs powerfully with luxury design palettes — backlit installations against dark walls produce dramatic glowing focal points; against warmer palettes the green character grounds as a sophisticated accent. Polished finishes maximise the translucency and colour depth — the most frequently specified finish for this material; honed finishes are occasionally specified but generally reduce the visual impact that defines onyx.

Applications

Green Onyx is most commonly specified for backlit feature walls, luxury bar fronts, hotel lobby installations, vanity tops, and statement pieces where the translucent character becomes the central design element. The stone is particularly effective in backlit applications where LED lighting behind the slab transforms the surface into a glowing dimensional artwork. It is rarely used as primary flooring due to softness compared to typical marbles.

Gangsaw slabs (280 × 180 cm) suit large backlit installations where the translucent character extends across maximum surface area; cutter slabs (180 × 60 cm) suit vanity tops and bar applications. Book-matched pairs are particularly effective for backlit feature walls — our Rajasthan facility selects adjacent slabs from the same block to ensure pattern continuity that the translucency makes especially important.

Finish Options

Polished finish is the standard finish for Green Onyx — it maximises the translucency and colour depth that define the stone, and produces the high-reflectivity surface needed for luxury feature applications. Honed finish is occasionally specified but generally reduces the visual impact of the translucency. Leathered and Brushed finishes are rarely used for this material — they work against the stone's defining character.

Available Sizes

This stone is supplied in two production formats. Gangsaw slabs are large-format slabs for premium architectural projects requiring continuous surfaces. Cutter slabs are smaller-format slabs optimised for residential installations and tile production.

Care & Maintenance

Apply a penetrating stone sealer at installation; reseal every 12-three years given onyx's softer character compared to typical marbles. Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and soft cloth — never acidic cleaners, abrasive pads, or steam cleaners, which can damage the calcite structure. Blot spills promptly. Onyx requires more careful handling than standard marble but rewards correct care with decades of luminous performance in luxury installations.
