Five centuries of architecture built on this one stone.

Origin & Geography

Makrana White Marble comes from the town of Makrana in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan — one of the most historically significant quarrying locations anywhere in India. The Makrana quarries have been in continuous operation for over five centuries. Their most celebrated application is the Taj Mahal in Agra, built in the 17th century, where Makrana marble forms the entire exterior shell and interior chambers. Numerous other Mughal-era monuments also drew stone from this source.

The quarries sit within a Precambrian geological formation at the northern edge of the Aravalli range. Extraction today supplies both the domestic Indian heritage restoration market and an established international export trade. Our sourcing relationship with Makrana quarry operators provides direct access to grade-selected blocks — the same diligence applied to every stone we export.

Geological Profile

Makrana White is a dolomitic marble — formed from dolomite-rich limestone rather than pure calcite limestone — which gives it a harder, denser structure than many other Indian white marbles. This dolomite composition results in tighter grain, greater durability under weathering, and the characteristic optical purity that produces its luminous white colour. Minimal iron content means the stone shows virtually no yellow or grey cast under most lighting conditions. The fine crystal structure produces a smooth, even texture that takes an exceptionally high polish. Origin and specifications verified by Gemarix.

Color & Character

Makrana White sits at the purer end of the Indian white marble spectrum. Slabs are predominantly white to milky white with very fine, sparse veining in pale grey or cream — far less pattern movement than most marbles. This restraint is the stone's design strength: it provides a clean, luminous surface that amplifies natural light and reads as spatially expansive, without the visual competition of bold veining.

Under natural light, polished Makrana White exhibits a subtle translucency — a glow within the stone rather than merely a reflective surface — that has made it a preferred material for architectural monuments where permanence and purity of form are the design intent. In contemporary interiors, this same quality makes it exceptionally effective in large-format floor and wall applications where the brief is calm, uncluttered elegance.

Applications

Makrana White is one of the most broadly applicable marbles in our range. Its neutral colour palette means it works across a wide variety of interior styles and coordinates with virtually any material palette. Primary applications include hotel lobby and corridor flooring, luxury apartment living areas, master bathroom full-room cladding, exterior-adjacent covered terraces, and heritage building restoration work where provenance and colour consistency with original stonework is important.

Gangsaw slabs (280 × 180 cm) deliver the large format appropriate for statement floors and wall installations. Cutter slabs (180 × 60 cm) are widely used for kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, stair treads, and window sills. Custom tile sizes are cut and finished at our Rajasthan facility; polished finish is most common, with honed gaining share in residential floor applications.

Finish Options

Polished finish produces the mirror-quality reflective surface that showcases Makrana White's optical luminosity most fully — the classical specification for both monumental and contemporary luxury interiors. Honed finish creates a smooth, low-glare matte surface in the same pure white, preferred for floor tiles in residential settings. Leathered and Brushed finishes introduce surface texture and are occasionally specified for exterior or feature wall applications where a more tactile, less formal quality is required.

Available Sizes

This stone is supplied in two production formats. Gangsaw slabs are large-format slabs for premium architectural projects requiring continuous surfaces. Cutter slabs are smaller-format slabs optimised for residential installations and tile production.

Care & Maintenance

Despite its density relative to other Indian marbles, Makrana White is still calcite-based and requires routine sealing. Apply a penetrating impregnating sealer on installation and reseal every 12–three years in high-use areas. The stone's light colour makes staining more visible than on darker stones — blot spills immediately and avoid prolonged contact with red wine, coffee, cooking oils, and acidic liquids. Use only pH-neutral stone cleaners for regular maintenance. For polished installations, professional re-polishing restores mirror finish if surface scratching or etching develops over time.
