Warm, ancient, sunlit — the desert stone of Jaisalmer.

Origin & Geography

Jaisalmer Yellow Marble is quarried in the Jaisalmer district of western Rajasthan, the desert region whose centuries-old golden city architecture is built from this same stone. Geologically, Jaisalmer Yellow is a calcareous limestone-marble of marine sedimentary origin, formed when the region was covered by ancient sea — fossil traces of marine organisms remain visible across many slabs. Subsequent diagenesis and minor metamorphism gave the stone its dense, polishable structure.

Gemarix sources Jaisalmer Yellow directly from quarry operators in the district, allowing us to control block selection for fossil character and colour consistency. The stone's character varies between blocks — some present more visible fossil patterning, others a cleaner yellow field. Our direct relationships allow project-matched supply for export specifications where buyers want either consistent uniform material or fossil-rich character expression.

Geological Profile

Jaisalmer Yellow is a calcareous limestone-marble of marine sedimentary origin, dominated by recrystallised calcite carrying significant iron oxide content responsible for its warm yellow colouration. Fossil shell fragments and bioclastic debris from the original marine environment are visible across many slabs as small white or grey inclusions, giving the stone documentary character that distinguishes it from purely metamorphic marbles. Origin and specifications verified by Gemarix.

Color & Character

Jaisalmer Yellow slabs present a warm yellow field — sometimes leaning honey-gold, sometimes cooler buttery yellow — with subtle fossil patterning visible across the surface as fine white or grey inclusions. Some blocks present near-uniform yellow fields; others carry richer fossil character with visible shell fragments and bioclastic detail. The overall reading is warm, ancient, and documentary.

The stone pairs powerfully with traditional Indian and Mediterranean design vocabularies — against terracotta, teak, leather, and warm metals it grounds sculpturally; in contemporary settings it provides an ancient, anchoring reference. Polished finishes maximise the warmth and bring out fossil detail; honed finishes soften the surface to a museum-grade matte ideal for floor applications.

Applications

Jaisalmer Yellow Marble is most commonly specified for traditional residential flooring, heritage architecture, hotel and resort projects with regional design vocabularies, courtyard cladding, and exterior cladding in warm climates. Its limestone-marble character makes it well-suited to both interior and protected exterior applications, and its warm character is integral to many heritage and contemporary projects across India and the Middle East.

Gangsaw slabs (280 × 180 cm) suit large floor and cladding installations; cutter slabs (180 × 60 cm) are typical for vanity tops, kitchen surrounds, and stair treads. Custom tile sizes cut at our Rajasthan facility include traditional Indian formats for heritage projects. Finishing is applied to specification before container despatch.

Finish Options

Polished finish maximises the warm yellow character and brings fossil detail forward — most often specified for vertical cladding and feature walls. Honed finish produces a soft matte that suits floor applications and heritage installations where reflectivity is unwanted. Leathered finish introduces gentle surface texture and suits courtyard and exterior applications. Brushed finish suits traditional and heritage architectural applications.

Available Sizes

This stone is supplied in two production formats. Gangsaw slabs are large-format slabs for premium architectural projects requiring continuous surfaces. Cutter slabs are smaller-format slabs optimised for residential installations and tile production.

Care & Maintenance

Apply a penetrating stone sealer at installation; reseal every 12-three years given the stone's limestone character (slightly more porous than typical marbles). Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner — avoid acidic cleaners and abrasive pads. Blot spills promptly, particularly wine, coffee, and citrus. The warm character is integral to the stone's mineralogy and remains stable under normal interior and protected exterior conditions.
